Weapon’s grooves have matched those on catridges found at the scene where the businessman was shot dead on May 5

The gunmen who kidnapped the daughter of former politician Kenneth Matiba could have killed businessman Jacob Juma, according to the latest police information.

The conclusion was reached after ballistic examinations on the AK-47 recovered from criminals shot last Sunday in Nairobi indicated it was the same weapon that was used in Juma’s murder on May 5.

The four-man gang is believed to have kidnapped Ivy Matiba and robbed her of cash, personal effects and demanded ransom from her family.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet on Monday night said police recovered the gun used to shoot Juma. A statement signed by spokesman George Kinoti did not indicate where the weapon was found.

The Star yesterday established that the AK-47, serial number 254974, was recovered from the four criminals killed as they drove on Nyayo roundabout last Sunday. A ballistic report by CID forensic investigators said the grooves in the weapon matched those on cartridges found at the scene where Juma was killed.

Investigations have shown one of the slain gangsters was a former police constable identified as Simon Muturi.

The officer, who was interdicted in 2012 after he was linked to criminal activities, was killed alongside three other men suspected to have been carjackers and kidnappers. He was facing charges of assault and malicious damage to property before a Mombasa court. The findings were, however, dismissed by social media users, who said this might be a cover-up.

(+) gang found with gun linked to kidnappings

A gang of four men killed on Sunday is suspected to have kidnapped Kenneth Matiba’s daughter. The same gang is said to have kidnapped city trader Imran Abdulgafur last Friday and abandoned him in Kikuyu after receiving Sh70,000 from the family. His younger brother Zakir Abdulgaful said Imran was driving to South C at 1am when he was abducted by four men claiming to be police officers. Detectives from the Special Crimes Unit and the Flying Squad traced the abductors the whole night but did not find them. Juma was shot dead by gunmen as he drove to his Karen home on May 6. His did not steal anything from him.
