Relief as weatherman reports end of long rains season

The weatherman on Tuesday announced the end of the long rains across the country.

The rains, whose effects have left a trail of deaths and destruction, are expected to gradually subside this week.

Most parts of the northern and south eastern areas such as Kitui are already dry.

“There will be a general reduction in rainfall intensity across the country,” James Muhindi, a senior met department officer, said.

Some parts of the Coast were flooded, triggering an outbreak of the Hepatitis A disease.

The meteorological department had earlier predicted the.

Separately, assistant director for Public Weather and Outreach Services Ayub Shaka praised the county governments for heeding to the forecast and investing in climate information.

He said due to climate change problems, some counties are now allocating about one per cent of their budgets towards awareness creation.

“It is encouraging that county governments are coming on board and investing on climate information, infrastructure and also in awareness through the county integrated development plan,” Shaka said.

He spoke at the ongoing United Nations Environment Assembly in Gigiri, Nairobi.

Shaka, however, said most Kenyans are still ignorant about weather forecasts and are sometimes caught unawares when the rains come.

“I urge Kenyans to listen and be keen to the weather information provided to them in different communication levels. They should also give feedback to the weather stations in their respective counties,” he said.
