IPOA to probe killings during Monday demos

IPOA has assured timely investigations into three deaths during protests on Monday.

In a statement on Tuesday, CEO Joel Mabonga said investigators were dispatched to Kisumu, Migori, Homabay and other areas where police were accused of using excessive force against demonstrators. He said the agency will recommend prosecution of officers found guilty.

"While culpability is personal to errant officers, IPOA will not hesistate to recommend criminal charges against police commanders issuing unlawful orders that lead to the loss of life, injuries, and destruction of property," Mabonga said.

on Monday during the countrywide protests organised by Cord in an attempt to push IEBC commissioners out of office.

Mabonga condemned the killings and passed condolences to the families of those killed.

He also sympathised with those who were injured during the protests, including police officers.

At the same time, he cautioned the public against engaging with the police.

"While IPOA undertakes to ensure the rights of the public are protected, we will take a dim view of persons who attack police officers,” he said.

In a quick rejoinder, police spokesman Charles Owino the use of live bullets by police to quell the protests.

"Fifty of them may have rubber bullets, but one or two will have live ammunition," the spokesman said.

He also said policemen may have also used live ammunition when the rubber bullets ran out.
