The High Court on Thursday upheld the conviction of former tourism PS Rebecca Nabutola and former KTB managing director Achieng' Ong'ong'a.

The two were seeking to have their conviction over Sh8.9 million fraud charges dropped.

They have been sentenced to one year in jail or pay a fine of 500,00 shillings in the case where they had been charged with flouting procurement procedures.

Justice Ngenye Macharia upheld the ruling that the two were guilty of conspiracy to defraud the ministry Sh8.9 million.

Nabutola and Ong'ong'a had appealed the case filed by then Kenya anti-corruption commission, now EACC.

They were booked for irregularly organising a trip for permanent secretaries to familiarise themselves with wildebeest migration in Maasai Mara in June 2007.

The function, meant for marketing the tourist attraction, was also attended by President Mwai Kibaki.

KTB ended up paying Sh8.4 million for a trip budgeted to cost Sh900,000, and which was to be funded by stakeholders in the tourism sector.

Nabutola and Ong’ong’a now joins former home affairs permanent secretary Sylvester Mwaliko who was also convicted of economic crimes committed during their tenure in office.
