Wiper party has dismissed claims that leader Kalonzo Musyoka will decamp from Cord to Jubilee as "mere political gimmicks".

Speculation arose following President Uhuru Kenyatta's State House meetings with Ukambani leaders including Wiper chairman David Musila.

Musila and Minority chief whip Francis Nyenze led a delegation of seven Kitui MPs to State House last year for talks on tarmacking Kibwezi-Kitui-Mwingi road.

But rumours emerged that their meeting concerned a position in the Jubilee government for Kalonzo.

Musila said on Tuesday: "We are tired of nonsense. Those are malicious claims by Jubilee operatives keen on dividing the Cord coalition. Their aim is to discredit our party leader out of fear of the coalition's unity."

The speculation escalated last weekend after Kalonzo said he will be among those who will welcome Uhuru to Kitui county for a tour of Ukambani that will begin on May 19.

But Musila said this does not mean that the Wiper leader, who declared , has agreed to work with Uhuru.

"There is nothing wrong with Kalonzo receiving the President. People should not read anything into it.

Meeting someone does not mean you agree with their principles," he said.

"It does not mean Kalonzo should run away on seeing Uhuru. We are principled leaders in a mature democracy. In parliament we sit, debate and dine with Jubilee MPs but that does not mean we are in unity."

Musila, who is Kitui Senator, said they went to State House only to discuss development projects that have stalled, including the long-awaited construction of the road.

Last week, Mwingi Central MP Joe Mutambu and

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua led a , professionals and residents to State House for a meeting with Uhuru.

Mutambu told the Star that the leaders discussed development matters as the President restrained them from talking about Kalonzo and digressing into politics.

Kalonzo is keen on being Cord's presidential flag bearer in 2017 as per the pre-election pact signed before the 2013 general election.

An MOU signed by the Cord coalition on December 4, 2012 stated that leader Raila Odinga was to be the 2013 presidential candidate, Kalonzo the 2017 candidate, and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang'ula the 2022 flag bearer.

But Raila declared, for the first time in public, that the 2013 pact is since Cord did not form the government.

Raila acknowledged there was a signed agreement with Kalonzo, stating he (Raila) would only serve one term if elected President — and hand the baton to the Wiper leader in 2017.

The coalition is expected to announce its presidential candidate before August 8.
