A mobile phone belonging to slain Kabete MP George Muchai was recovered from one of the suspects' home in Kangemi, a Nairobi court heard yesterday.

Witness Stephen Kuria said he found the phone charging at Simon Wambugu's home. He said the phone puzzled him because he had never seen a similar one before.

Kuria told trial magistrate Daniel Ogembo that Wambugu was a friend.

He said they met at the Kangemi bus stage and asked him whether they could go to his house for lunch.

They arrived at the house but Wambugu did not enter saying he had to rush to his grandmother's house.

The grandmother allegedly stayed a few metres from Wambugu's house.

Kuria said he opened the house and saw the Huawei phone charging.

He said the mobile phone did not have a SIM card so he inserted his to see how it functioned.

Kuria said Wambugu arrived as he admired the phone.

He said Wambugu reprimanded him, saying the phone's owner would be annoyed if he found out somebody was playing with it.

Kuria said because of curiosity, he inserted his sim card in the phone to operate it.

He said immediately he inserted it, Wambugu, who had just stepped in, ordered him stop operating the phone.

Kuria said he was arrested by CID officers with Wambugu and Oscar Enyanja. He said he did not know why they had been arrested, but he later knew the phone belonged to Muchai.

Margaret Njeri, Raphael Kimani, Kimani Anyonyi, alias Musti, and Stephen Lipapo, alias Chokore, Erick Isabwa, alias chairman, Jane Kamau, alias Shiro, and Wambugu have denied several counts of robbery with violence.

Muchai, his bodyguards Samuel Kalikia, Samuel Matanta and driver Stephen Wambugu were killed before dawn on February 7 last year on Kenyatta Avenue.
