Transparency International and civil society groups want all Supreme Court judges to quit ahead of the 2017 general election following graft allegations against one of them.

Isaiah Mwongela from TI says the Supreme Court faces an image crisis and can no longer be trusted to handle election disputes.

“The judges should voluntarily quit to pave way for a fresh start,” he said.

Mwongela spoke in Eldoret town yesterday.

He attended a press briefing by representatives from the North Rift Good Governance Coalition, which brings together the civil society groups.

Mwongela said they fully support a petition by the Law Society of Kenya to have the court disbanded.

He urged Chief Justice Willy Mutunga to process the petition as quickly as possible.

“We need a fresh start and that is why as CJ Mutunga retires, the judges should go along with him,” Mwongela said.

The pressure on the judges to quit follows the recommendation by the Judicial Service Commission that a tribunal be formed to probe allegations that Justice Philip Tunoi received a Sh200 million bribe during an election petition.
