Terror suspect jailed 20 years for radicalising Mombasa boys

A terror suspect convicted of radicalising boys in Mombasa has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

also known as Salim Mohammed was also acquitted on Thursday of belonging to al Shabaab terror group and recruiting members.

Principal magistrate Diana Mochache said the prosecution lacked sufficient evidence on these charges.

The former Maseno University Student was arrested in Kaloleni, Kilifi county, for allegedly radicalising and recruiting seven Gadini Primary School boys into the terror group.

Police said he was an Imam at Liwatoni Mosque in Ganjoni when he committed the offence.

In a renewed war against terrorism, county commissioner Nelson Marwa and regional police commander Francis Wanjohi said detectives are working round the clock to arrest all terror suspects.

A G3 rifle stolen from a police officer guarding Gulf Africa bank on October 2, 2015, and an M4 rifle stolen in November 2014, were recovered alongside 345 bullets, 15 phones and a laptop.

A source at the National Intelligence Service told The Star he was among those who sneaked out of Boni Forest on December 29, 2015.

"The suspect's arrest is a major relief to the state. He will give us crucial information because he was among those who sneaked out of the forest to plan major New Year attacks," the source said.
