Big fish brace for court cases in New Year

More than 100 former and current government officials will be frequenting the corridors of justice this year to fight charges mostly related to corruption.

In 2015, Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko approved prosecution recommended by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.

Defendants come from national and county governments and are accused of abuse of office, financial irregularities, hate speech and other offenses.

They include two former Cabinet Secretaries from the current administration — Charity Ngilu (Lands) and Michael Kamau (Transport).

They are charged with abuse of office leading to loss of public funds. Ngilu is charged with obstructing investigations into the Karen land transfer.

Former Ministers in the previous government — David Mwiraria, Chris Obure, Amos Kimunya and Chris Okemo — will be in court.

Eight former Principal Secretaries will be there.

They are Peter Mangiti, Bitange Ndemo, Mbui Magari, Dave Munya Mwangi, Sammy Kirui, Thuita Mwangi, Zakayo Cheruiyot and Sammy Kyungu.

Some 11 current and former MPs face face various charges, including incitement and hate speech.

They include Alfred Keter (Nandi Hills), Sonia Sujeev Kaur (Nominated), Julius Ndegwa (Lamu West), Peter Shehe (Ganze), Njoroge Chege (Kasarani) and Richard Onyonka (Kitutu Chache).

Others are Moses Kuria (Gatundu South), Mishi Mboko (Mombasa), Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete), Jakoyo Midiwo (Gem) and Gideon Mwiti (Imenti Central).

Three senators — Johnstone Muthama (Machakos), Ali Bule Abdi (Tana River) and Isaac Melly (Uasin Gishu) — face charges.

Some 20 former and suspended heads of state corporations and parastatals will be in court.

They include Nelson Githinji (National Youth Service), Juma Mwatate (Youth Enterprise Fund), Ibrahim Haji (Kenya Meat Commission) and Geoffrey Kiprop (Kenya Veterinary Vaccine Production Institute).

Others are Evans Ngibuini (National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation) Silas Simiyu (Geothermal Development Corporation) and James Oswago (Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission).

Also facing charges are James Wagema (National Housing Corporation), Gladys Shollei (Judiciary Registrar), Njuguna Ndungu (Central Bank of Kenya) and Shem Ochuodho (Kenya Pipeline Company).

Others are Francis Chahonyo (Postal Corporation), Samuel Gichuru (Kenya Power), Francis Oyugi (Kenya Wine Agency) and Francis Sanya (Tarda).

Others are Jackson Githaka (Kenya Reinsurance Corporation), John Faustine Kinyua (Kenya Reinsurance Corporation and Davy Koech (Kemri).

The DPP approved prosecution of Chief Land Registrar Sarah Mwenda and her deputy Geoffrey Birundu, the senior deputy director of Survey and Registrar of Titles.

Four governors in the dock include Isiolo boss Godana Doyo, accused of abuse of office and misappropriation of funds.

Others facing abuse of office charges are Wairia Mwangi (Murang’a), Nathif Juma Aden (Garissa) and Wycliffe Oparanya (Kakamega).

Several county assembly speakers and members of county executive committees face charges.

Speakers are Ann Atieno Adul (Kisumu), Albert Kipkogei Kochei (Elgeyo Marakwet) and David Lemantile (Isiolo County).

Three county secretaries — Irene Wanjiru (Machakos), Margaret Kariuki (Embu) and Fredrick Sifuna (Trans Nzoia) — will face the judge.

Four executive committee members are Nicholas Ngeno (Kericho), John Mwangi (Nyeri), Martin Kanjuaigwa (Nyeri) and Stanley Kiplang’at (Bomet).

Vihiga County Assembly Clerk Joseph Alusiola and Nyeri County Chief of Staff Simon Wachira also face charges.

GDC company secretary Praxidis Saisi and Kenya Pipeline Company Chief Engineer Josephat Kipkoech also face charges.
