KAKAMEGA Senator Bonny Khalwale was heckled at a funeral in Mumias on Saturday over Sh12.5 million he allegedly received to stop fighting sugar imports.

The senator has been a vocal critic of the state’s deal to import sugar from Uganda, in light of the troubles facing Mumias Sugar Company.

ODM national youth chairman Rashid Mohammed asked Khalwale to explain himself after a bank slip with his details started circulating on social media.

“Today you have an opportunity to clear the air,” he said, amid applause from the mourners.

Mohammed spoke at the funeral of former councillor Were Bombo in Mumias West constituency.

Area MP Johnson Naika and Vihiga nominated MCA Ben Ombima were present.

However, Khalwale was forced to leave in a huff as the mourners barred him from addressing them.

Khalwale told the Star on the phone the slip is “fake”.

The senator said the slip is being circulated by his political opponents.

He cited former Mumias sugar company managers “who looted the company” and sugar barons.

Speaking on the phone after the funeral, Mohammed said: “We are wondering why the zeal he had earlier in fighting sugar imports has diminished.”
