MAASAI morans in Kajiado county have killed a baby elephant from a herd of 15, claiming defence of their property.

The herd on Thursday invaded Lorngosua village and a school near Bissil town.

Angered by frequent invasion and destruction of property by the jumbos, about 50 Maasai morans took arms and faced the elephants head-on.

They killed one instantly while four others escaped with arrow injuries.

“The elephants damaged my water pan, which I constructed a cost of Sh500,000,” former councillor Felix Ngaru said.

"They went to Lorngosua Primary School and chased away students."

Ngaru said residents had reported the invasion to the Kenya Wildlife Service three days earlier.

They took the law into their hands after the KWS "took their time", Ngaru said.

The morans said they will continue killing the elephants straying into their farms to push the government to action.

“We cannot put our children at risk in the name of conserving killer elephants,” resident Peter Molonget told the Star.

"Let them come and take away their elephants."

KWS county director Elema Hapicha was not available for comment.

The KWS has been transferring elephants in the nearby areas to Tsavo National Park since February.
