Mwathethe to take over KDF command

Lieutenant-General Samson Mwathethe will today beome the new Chief of the Defence Forces.

Mwathethe will officially take over from Julius Karangi, 64 whose term has come to an end after 42-year stint at the Kenya Defence Forces.

Karangi served as CDF since July 2011.

The ceremony will be held at the Defence headquarters in Hurlingham.

Mwathethe was appointed as the new CDF by President Uhuru Kenyatta last month.

Prior to his appointment, Mwathethe 57, who served as Vice-Chief of Defence Forces.

He also previously served as Kenya Navy Commander, Deputy Kenya Navy Commander, Base Commander and Fleet Commander.

The incoming boss has his work cut out as he seeks to tame the increasing Alshabaab insurgency in the country and the region.

KDF is fighting under the African Union Mission to Somalia, which has since succeeded in neutralising the militant group in Somalia.

Analysts say the changes is likely to see Kenya revise its military policy in the fight against Alshabaab in Somalia, with the intention of expanding gradually to the rest of the Horn of African nation.

KDF is currently in charge of Sector 2 under Amisom command, which has its headquarters in the port city of Kismayo.
