KENYANS should brace up for more rains expected in various parts of the country this week.

Kenya Meteorological Department senior officer Samuel Mwangi yesterday said April is a rainy season and Kenyans should expect more downpour before the end of the month.

“The upsurge in rainfall we are experiencing is likely to go on for the next two to three days,” Mwangi told the Star on the phone.

On Sunday, a heavy downpour in Nairobi and its environs flooded major roads and submerged cars at parking lots in the estates and the central business district, rendering some parts impassable.

This has raised questions on the city's drainage system. The heavy rain also caused traffic snarl-ups in and outside the city.

Mwangi said the city centre recorded 75.3mm of rain, 64.3mm at Wilson Airport, 59mm in Eastleigh and 43mm in Dagoretti.

Rainy seasons are normally witnessed between mid March and end of April or early May during which farms are prepared for planting.

Mwangi said the upsurge of rainfall in the past three days does not mean there will be more rainfall this season compared to other years.

He said Nairobi and Central Kenya will receive more rainfall that the rest of the country.

Kisumu, Eldoret, Kitale, Bungoma, Kakamega, Kisii, Kericho, Busia and other parts of Rift Valley will also receive high amount of rains.

Speaking recently during the release of weather outlook for March, April and May, Kenya Meteorological Services deputy director Peter Ambenje said the National Disaster Operations Centre had been on alert over damages that may be caused by the rains.

During heavy rains, disasters such as lightning, mudslides and floods are expected.
