A stampede at the Likoni crossing channel on Friday morning left several people injured.

Crowds scrambled to board MV Kilindini and MV Harambee, the only ferries that were operational.

The two only transported commuters, causing a snarl-up.

Kenya Ferry Services withdrew MV Likoni and MV Nyayo for structural repairs and maintenance last week.

MV Nyayo was however deployed to ease the congestion.

Bofu ward representative Suleiman Boma, who was caught in the 6am incident, urged KFS to expedite the repairs.

“This is a time bomb. If KFS is unable to serve the locals, they should ask KPA for assistance,” he said.

A commuter asked the government to take measures against worse incidents.

“The Transport cabinet secretary should restructure operations at KFS to save thousands of Kenyan from the looming disaster,” he said.

Some of the casualties were given first aid while others were taken to nearby hospitals.
