ABUSE of antibiotics leads to drug resistancem, health experts have warned.

A study by researchers from the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy and Princeton University says antibiotic use, both necessary and unnecessary, leads directly to resistance.

A Kenya Medical Research Scientist, Sam Kariuki, cautioned against continued abuse of antibiotics saying it they have "dire" health effects.

“The issue of antibiotics resistance is growing and it will affect the entire healthcare of this country,” Kariuki said adding that a World Health Organisation sitting in April declared the problem a major concern that needs immediate redress.

If not contained, experts warn that the cost of treatment will soar, as many drugs on shelves will not treat common ailments such as diarrhea and other bacterial infections.

Speaking on phone, Kariuki blamed the culture of “over-the-counter” decisions of purchasing drugs on laxity and lack of teamwork from law enforcement and regulation agencies.
