The National Assembly
Administration and National Security Committee
will tomorrow table the report on the
Mpeketoni
killings.
The attacks claimed more than 60 lives.
Committee chairperson Asman Kamama said following the gravity of the killings, the committee will ensure it tables a comprehensive report on the issue.
“Following the urgency and gravity of the massacre, I will try as much as possible to table the report on Thursday,” Kamama said after Lamu women's representative Shakila Abdalla sought a statement on the killings.
Two weeks ago, the committee met and gave President Uhuru a 14-day ultimatum to sack all the country’s security chiefs or initiate a parliamentary process to remove them.
The deadline has quietly elapsed without the committee making good their threat.
Already, a Cord MP has filed a motion to censure Interior Secretary Joseph ole Lenku for "mishandling" the country’s security docket and especially the Mpeketoni attacks.
Debate on the motion was expected to come up on the floor of the House yesterday but may be slated for today.
The attacks led to the arrest of Lamu Governor Issa Timamy.
He was charged in court with murder and forcible transfer of population and released on Sh5 million bail.
Also in the National Assembly yesterday,
Laisamis MP Joseph Lekuton wants Majority Leader Aden Duale and Minority Leader Francis Nyenze denied some of the privileges they enjoy.
Lekuton requested for a statement from the Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs on whether it is lawful for the government to extend benefits and privileges for the two.
The MP says the two offices have no constitutional basis and other people purporting to hold such offices can claim similar benefits.
