Embu Governor Martin Wambora’s lawyer Wilfred Nyamu yesterday walked out of a Senate Special Committee probing his client’s impeachment. Nyamu said Wambora is not likely to get a fair hearing.

“My instructions are that I should not participate beyond where I have reached,” he said moments before he left the hearing at the KICC in Nairobi.

Nyamu told the committee that Wambora will not be appearing at the Senate committee probing his impeachment unless it is constituted afresh. Wambora said he does not expect justice as the senators in the committee are the same ones who probed him in February.

“Wambora notes that the special committee is comprised of the same members who presided over the previous proceedings. While he has no doubt about the integrity of the honorable members, the likelihood of bias is real and indeed the prospect of an impartial hearing is nil,” Nyamu said.

“Wambora respectfully urges the whole committee to recuse itself and refer the matter to the speaker of the Senate to reconstitute the membership.” Nyamu said Wambora is is required to appear before the same committee with the same charges he had earlier been accused of and were substantiated.

Committee chairman Boni Khalwale assured Wambora of a fair hearing. He said Wambora is free to defend himself before the committee.

“This committee is hearing fresh accusations. We are telling Wambora to have confidence in this committee,” Khalwale said.
