Kidero, NEMA to clean up Nairobi

Nairobi governor Dr Evans Kidero has announced plans to

work

with the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to clean up the county.

The Nairobi Governor will work with NEMA to tackle various challenges facing the city including poor waste management, non - adherence to zoning specifications, the mushrooming of illegal structures, noise and vehicle pollution as well as pollution of rivers by Nairobi residents.

“Key issues that

are to be immediately addressed include the need for the county to adopt the Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan, proper management of existing dumpsites by fencing them off and undertaking environmental audits, ” said NEMA director general Prof. Geoffrey Wahungu.

Wahungu said NEMA will also be involved during the changing of zonations of the county. He said a requirement for all developments to submit Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for building orders will be adopted

before any developments are approved.

“Environmental legal statuses are to be reflected in the county laws which are to be written with NEMA being involved in the process,” said Kidero. Kidero further stated that any unplanned and unapproved structures will have to adhere to the standards set by the county government while cleaning and restoring Nairobi River will be prioritized.
