Former Kenya 15’s international Lawrence Buyachi is the new Kisumu RFC coach.

Buyachi, popularly known as Lawi Jogoo, beat three other candidates to the post, according to the club's secretary Jaycox Mwavali.

Other candidates were immediate former coach Ugandan Brian Makalama and Alex Agalo.  “Buyachi is the candidate we were looking for, and we believe he has what it takes to steer the team to Kenya Cup,” said Mwavali.

The highly decorated coach’s main task will be to guide Kisumu RFC back to Kenya Cup having been relegated in the 2020 season.

Mwavali added: “His main strength is in coaching forwards because we already have a backs coach. They will complement each other.”

He is also a strength and conditioning specialist and his qualifications include World Rugby Level Two 15’s coach and he is currently doing Level Two 7’s coach.

The secretary said Buyachi, who is also an ICT project management freelancer, will be unveiled on Saturday ahead of the new season. He will assess the current squad and make recommendations on new signings, according to Mwavali.

During his heydays, the burly Buyachi played for Uganda's Pirates, Impala, Nakuru RFC and Kabras. He has had coaching stints with South Coast Pirates, Kabarak RFC, Kabras Academy and Eldoret RFC as a guest coach.

He will be assisted by Dick Osano while Caleb Kiprotich remains the team manager. Former club secretary, Fredrick Maubi is the director of rugby.

Buyachi described himself as: “A highly competent, qualified rugby mind with vast knowledge in rugby coaching and fitness training with keen interest but not limited to talent identification and development.”
