US ambassador Whitman woos investors to Homa Bay

The envoy said the county has unique factors that can attract foreign investment.

United States Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman has asked investors seeking opportunities in Kenya to pitch tents in Homa Bay County.

The envoy said that Homa Bay has unique advantages that are critical in attracting investors including a huge potential access to the regional market.

"I don't want to tell you that the location of Homa Bay is perfect for access to the East African Community market of 500 million customers,'' Whitman said.

Speaking about education as one of the other factors attracting investment to the County, Whitman said Homa Bay has a huge potential in the education sector.

"The growth of any economy often hinges on a great university and working with the private sector, the government and investors. What you have here in Homa Bay is a magical combination," she said.

On Tourism, Whitman said Lake Victoria is largely untapped for its tourism potential.

"The county also has an amazing national park that could benefit from ecological and other wildlife activities,'' she said.

The envoy named agriculture, agribusiness, Health and the blue economy as some of the areas with opportunities for investors in the county of Homa Bay.

"Homa Bay is well poised to steer the cotton renascence here in Kenya,'" Whitman said.

Naming the cancer research centre as another area for potential investment, Whitman said the centre will support the whole of Nyanza region.

"The work that the governor and her team have done in improving the economy is unparalleled and we must build on that strength,"  she added.

Fish farming, Whitman said, offers a unique opportunity for companies that want to invest in processing and value addition.

"I think the new name for fish agriculture will be fish tech," Whitman said.

Homa Bay is hosting an investment conference at Tom Mboya University.

The conference is being attended by hundreds of investors including heads of key banking institutions in the country.

The three-day event seeks to bring both international and local investors to tap into the county's investment potential. 

President William Ruto is in Homa Bay to officially open the county government's 2nd investment conference.

Ruto will also inspect various projects currently ongoing in the county.

Some of these projects are the construction of 110 units of affordable houses in Homa Bay town, the renovation of both Homa Bay and Kendu Bay piers and the construction fish market in Homa Bay town.
