Former Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos has passed away.

Dos Santos died on Friday, at the age of 79.

He ruled the oil and diamond rich state for almost four decades.

His death was announced by the Angolan presidency.

Dos Santos died while undergoing treatment in Spain following a long battle with an illness they did not disclose.

Among the many things he will be remembered with is ending a long-running civil war in the early 2000s.

Dos Santos became Angola's president following the death of the first president António Agostinho Neto.

He was 37 years old at the time.
