Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has opted to pay bus fares for the students who are currently stranded in the city.
In a video posted on his X account, the Governor is seen interacting with learners at the Central Business District as he directs some of them to the vehicles.
Sakaja stated that his teams are at various bus stations sorting out transport for children in uniform as they make their way back home.
"Following the postponement of School Opening Dates and the fact that many parents had already released their children to report to school this morning, we have organized the payment of return fare for the stranded students," he said.
The students and pupils were stranded after the government through the Ministry of Education issued a statement early Monday postponing school reopening.
The second term was scheduled to resume today, Monday, April 29 but Education CS Ezekiel Machogu postponed the same to May 6.
He said sending students and staff to the affected schools would be putting their lives at risk, hence the decision to postpone the reopening.
"The devastating effects of the rains in some of the schools are so severe that it will be imprudent to risk the lives of learners and staff before water-tight measures are put in place to ensure adequate safety of all affected school communities," Machogu said.
"Based on this assessment, the Ministry of Education has resolved to postpone the reopening of all primary and secondary schools by one week, to Monday, May 6, 2024."
Earlier, Sakaja had promised to facilitate transport for the students noting the inconvenience caused by the ministry's early morning communication.
"I have seen a few photos showing some students who are stranded. So when I leave here I will go and pay for their bus fare for their return home. I will also buy them soda so that they have something to eat," he said speaking on Radio Citizen.
