A primary school head teacher was Sunday found dead after he went missing for five days in Oyugis town, Kasipul constituency.

Richard Otieno Kobe who was the head teacher of Raganga primary school in Kisii County was found dead in a water borehole near his home at Aloo estate in Oyugis.

His younger brother Gilbert Kobe said the body was found by his son who had gone to fetch water in the borehole on Sunday morning.

Gilbert said their last phone communication with Richard was Tuesday.

“He wanted me to come and help him do some work at home since I was in Narok County. We agreed to meet after travelling back home on Wednesday,” Gilbert said.

The deceased is reported to have left home without carrying his mobile phone and never told anyone where he was going.

His family expected him back home but he never returned.

The following day, the family began looking for him desperately.

They reported the matter to the Oyugis police station.

“We looked for all those days until today (Sunday) when we were called from home that the body had been found in the water borehole,” Gilbert said on Sunday.

The family members rushed back home and called the police who removed the body from the scene.

“I expected to find my brother alive but he is no more. We are shocked as a family!"Gilbert said.

Kenya National National Union of Teachers (KNUT) secretary in Homa Bay Patrick Were called on security agencies to probe what caused the teacher's death.

Were said the borehole in which his body was found had a lockable seal, a situation that raises suspicion on how he entered the borehole.

“The borehole has a seal and is lockable. It isn't easy for someone to fall into the borehole accidentally. We urge security agencies to investigate what caused the death,” Were said.

He described Gilbert's demise as a setback to the teaching fraternity in the area.

Rachuonyo South Sub-county Police Commander Lilies Wachira said they are undertaking investigations.

The body was moved to the Rachuonyo South Sub-county Hospital mortuary for postmortem.

“It is sad that the teacher was found dead after the family reported that he was missing. The matter is under investigation,” Wachira said.
