The Nairobi Hospital has invested more than Sh1.6 billion worth of projects in the last one year as it moves to deliver quality services to patients in East and Central Africa.

The completion of these projects, all funded by internally generated revenues, has been accelerated to not only reverse the trend of thousands of Kenyans seeking medical treatment abroad, but also attract patients from neighbouring countries such as Uganda, Ethiopia, DRC, South Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, among others.

Every year, more than 10,000 Kenyans travel abroad, especially to India and South Africa, to seek treatment for various ailments.

This causes considerable foreign exchange drain on the affected families and the country.

Addressing members on Thursday during this year’s annual general meeting, the chairman of the board of management Major (rtd) Dr Irungu Ndirangu said the hospital’s brand equity and quality is world-class and remains strong not only in Kenya, but also in the region.

“Our multimillion-shilling infrastructural undertakings include the recent acquisition and installation of a fully-fledged state-of-the-art Biplane Cath Lab for cardio, neuro and vascular treatment services. This is the first such facility in East and Central Africa,” Dr Ndirangu told shareholders.

He said MRI equipment has been upgraded to improve services to patients. The hospital has completed two new theatres, laboratories and pharmacies that serve patients from Kenya and the region.

The hospital has also embarked on its digital transformation journey as it endeavours to offer patients the best care.

The digitisation project entails a new health management information system and enterprise resource planner designed to improve information flow throughout the institution.

Vice chairman Dr Chris Bichage said they are aware of the ever-changing healthcare operating environment.

“We continue diversifying our revenue streams and enhancing our comprehensive cost-control programme, focusing on optimising our supply chain and improving operational efficiency,” he told participants during the AGM.

“We have invested in various capital projects aimed at improving the quality of care as well as digital transformation because we believe that a focus on quality will not only benefit our patients but also attract more healthcare consumers to choose The Nairobi Hospital for their medical needs,” Dr Bichage added.

CEO James Nyamongo said, “We have taken significant steps to reposition the facility as the preferred healthcare provider in the region and beyond. Our strategic projects, which have all been supported by internally generated funds, are aimed at delivering superior performance in the short run while remaining sustainable in the long term.”

“We are now a sustainable and innovative organisation fully committed to enhancing our status as a world-class multi-specialty hospital delivering exceptional quality care and outstanding stakeholder experience,” he assured the members.
