Nine people have died and several injured after a bus heading to Nairobi collided with an oncoming trailer at Kwa Harun blackspot in Kamara along the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.

Seven people died on the spot while two succumbed to injuries as they were being attended to at Eldama Ravine Hospital during the Sunday morning accident.

"The accident happened after the Greenline bus heading to Nairobi from Western collided head-on with a trailer going to the opposite direction during the

1 am incident," area chief Joseph Korir said.

The chief said the bus is suspected to have been attempting to overtake other vehicles at high speed.

Scores of those injured were rushed to Eldama Ravine and Molo Referal Hospitals in Koibatek and Molo sub counties.

"We boarded the bus but after a few kilometres, we asked the driver to slow down as he was driving at high speed but he didn't listen...He kept on complaining...We fell asleep only to be woken up by a loud bang and realised the bus had collided with a trailer," Grace Nekesa, a mother of five narrated.

Eldama Ravine Hospital confirmed having received 74 injured, among them five children and two students who were heading home for their half term break.

"Two people succumbed to their injuries at the facility while five others have been referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret," Mary Serem, a nursing officer at the health facility said.

Nakuru County Police Commander Stephen Matu said the bodies were taken to Molo sub county

hospital mortuary.

"We are yet to get the official number of survivors since others were rushed to the hospital by good Samaritans. Investigations have begun into the incident," he said.
