Kisumu county has established an automatic weather station in Nyando constituency for metrological services.
The
Sh5 million
station is expected to improve network observation and provide early warning signs on looming floods.
The equipment will cover a radius of 15 km from the station’s physical location.
It will measure air temperature, wind speed and direction, cloud height solar radiation among other measurable elements.
The project launched on Monday by Deputy Governor Mathews Owili will supplement other stations in Muhoroni, Koru, Maseno and Airport in the county.
The county will also put up other stations in the seven sub-counties.
Nyando area has been facing perennial floods leading to loss of lives, property and thousands of people being displaced.
Owili lauded residents for donating land for the construction of the project saying it will provide proper information on flood mitigation.
“The station will help in identifying early warning signs and enable the county to initiate mitigating factors to reduce the effects of floods,” he said.
