Safaricom on Sunday suffered an internet downtime which last several hours after 9am, crippling operations in various offices countrywide.

The telco attributed the loss of internet connectivity to 'multible fibre link cuts which affected critical transmission equipment'.

"This has resulted in loss of voice and SMS services in the Coast and lower Eastern regions as well as general data unavailability across the network," Safaricom said in a statement.

The firm, before the services were restored, informed its customers of the situation through a pre-recorded message on helpline 100.

"We are experiencing internet connectivity issues with our services. We are working to resolve the situation. We apologise for any inconvenience caused," the telco said.
