A 60-capacity dormitory went up in flames at Maliera Boys' Secondary School on Tuesday, a day after students issued a notice demanding a new bus.

Principal Samuel Oyondi said the fire at the school in Gem, Siaya county, started minutes to 7 pm. The cause is yet to be established.

No one was hurt as the students were having supper at that time but no property was salvaged.

Oyondi said signs of a plan to destroy the school's property were seen after the students issued the notice.

The 10 students who presented the petition were arrested and will be arraigned on Thursday on incitement charges.

The principal said the students had just returned from a break they were given two weeks ago after attempting to burn the library.

He said the latest incident caught them unawares since they they and the students had reached an agreement on how to solve problems.

"We agreed on issues except the demand for a new bus," the teacher told the Star on phone on Wednesday.

The school is now in a growing list of those that have lost millions of shillings in a wave of student unrest.

Dormitory fires have become commonplace in the past few weeks for reasons that experts say include exam fever, soaring levels of indiscipline and lack of parental guidance.

About 47 schools have been affected by the incidents reported since May. The Ministry of Education has maintained that those culpable will be treated as criminals.
