Swiss President Alain Berset has acknowledged that the refugee burden is not just a Kenyan problem but a global concern.
Speaking today as he concluded his tour of Kakuma Refugee Camp and the Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement Scheme in Turkana County, President Berset thanked Kenya for hosting a large number of refugees from the region.
The Swiss President called on the international community to back Kenya’s efforts in addressing the plight of the refugees.
He said there was room for the international community to do more in supporting the Kenyan Government cope with the bulging burden of hosting refugees.
President Berset’s visit to the Kakuma Refugee Camp comes a day after he held talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi, where the two leaders witnessed the signing of an agreement that will clear the way for the recovery of assets acquired through corruption and crime in Kenya and stashed in foreign countries.
The Kakuma camp and Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement had a population of 185,449 registered refugees and asylum-seekers at the end of January this year.
