Four perish in Iten-Kabarnet road accident

Four people have died in a road accident along the hilly Iten-Kabarnet road in Elgeyo Marakwet.

The accident occurred when a

14-seater matatu veered off the road and rolled several times at a sharp bent near in Kolool area.

Keiyo North police boss Mwenda Meme said eight passengers were injured in the 6 am accident.

The four died while receiving treatment at Iten County Referral Hospital.

“The matatu lost stability after it was hit from behind by a saloon car and started rolling several times. Passengers sustained cuts and fracture due to the impact,” Meme said.

The vehicle belonging to Beads Sacco matatu was from Eldoret en route to Kabarnet town.

“We are asking motorists plying this route to be more careful because the road is hilly and has many sharp corners,” Meme said.

Elgeyo Marakwet health executive Kiprono Chepkok said all the occupants in the matatu sustained injuries.

Chepkok said three passengers who sustained serious head injuries were rushed to Eldoret’s Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.

“We mobilized our emergency teams but we had to refer other patients to MTRH for specialist treatment,” Chepkok said.

He said: “Doctors are stabilizing the remaining patients. Others are undergoing blood transfusion at Iten county referral hospital.”
