The National Environment Management has banned sand harvesting along Narok-Mai Mahiu road.

This followed the situation where the road has been cut off by floodwaters.

Through a statement, the environment regulator said the ban will be effected immediately.

"The ban includes but is not limited to the stretch from Mai-Mahiu to Narok, being a 10-kilometre radius on either side of the road."

The agency says it has deployed inspectors and law enforcement to ensure the notice is complied with.

The authority will review its position once it has carried out a comprehensive strategic environmental assessment on sand harvesting.

Mai-Mahiu hit the headlines following a fault line that developed in Naivasha during the ongoing heavy rains.
