NEMA has denied approving construction works on riparian lands in Nairobi in the wake of concerns about flooding.

The agency, in a statement on Tuesday, said it has never approved any Environmental Impact Assessment for development activities on riparian reserves.

"Members of the public are further warned that any structure, developments, discharge or dumpsite within the riparian reserves are illegal," read the statement.

The National Environment Management Authority said the riparian reserve is set at a minimum of six metres to a maximum of 30metres from the highest watermark.

This is as per the Environmental Management and Coordination Management Regulations, 2009.

Heavy rains pounding the city has seen most roads and major streets flooded due to poor drainage.

Environmental experts have raised concerns about buildings put up in riparian reserves, hence blocking waterways.

Nairobi governor Mike Sonko apologised over the flooded roads, broken sewerage systems.

He also said the problems of lack of clean water and poor disposal of garbage in the city will be solved.

Sonko spoke after a meeting with Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka at City Hall on Tuesday.

The county boss admitted that is a major challenge in running the county, "having inherited failed systems."
