At least 10,000 Turkana residents have been displaced by flooding following heavy rains.

On Friday night, River Kawalase burst its banks, affecting transport on roads such as

Lodwar-Kitale-South Sudan.

Guests

from South Sudan

who attended the Tobong’ ulore Cultural Festival

were left stranded after River Karach in Kakuma also burst its banks.

The prices of commodities also shot up as traders have been affected by the state of the River Turkwel drift in Kainuk - it has been submerged for close to two weeks now.

On Saturday, the county's Disaster executive Charles Lokioto

said they were working with NGOs and the national government for the provision of food, shelter and psycho-social

counselling.

"More than 10,000 people living in Soweto, Napetet, Kawalase, Nabute and Nakwalele and Loitaktok villages have been displaced and their houses destroyed," Lokioto

said.

He added that 5,592 houses were swept by floodwaters and that the victims were moved to

Kenya Medical Training College and Kawalase Primary School while some were taken to their relatives' homes.

Residents said rains have not been this heavy since 1985.

Mama Magaret Nawoi, who operates a mini supermarket and a bakery in Nabute, said she could not find her children.

"All the merchandise in my shops were swept," she added.

John Bosco, a resident of Soweto, asked the government to intervene saying

he did not have food and clothing.

James Ejore, a pastoralist who lives at Soweto said he lost about 12 goats in the floods.

He added that clean water cannot be found and said waterborne diseases such as cholera are likely to arise.
