A Kenyan man is among three suspects arrested in Uganda in a gold smuggling syndicate.

William Akitale was arrested on Wednesday at the Kenya-Uganda border by customs officials working together with Interpol officers.

Also arrested is a German national said to be working with the United Nations.

The third suspect is the driver of a car in which the two men were travelling in.

A statement from Uganda police to Interpol Nairobi issued last evening said the suspects had travelled from DRC congo.

The statement said investigations had been spread to Czech Republic where Akitale and his team are said to be exporting precious stones.

Police said they found documents that indicated that the smuggled gold was destined to Dubai and finally to a company identified as Victoria Petroleus SRO of Czech republic.

Interpol East-Africa has been conduction an operation across East African countries to deal with illegal gold smugglers.
