The US has praised Kenya for its efforts to improve regional security under the Security Governance Initiative.

Ambassador Robert Godec noted on Tuesday that Kenya's performance in the initiative was "exemplary and worth emulating".

Godec pledged the US government's continued support in his meeting with Interior CS Fred Matiang'i.

Matiang'i earlier

thanked the US for support in counter-terrorism, border security management and police reforms under the SGI.

Kenya is one of many countries that benefit from

the new joint endeavor between the United States and six African partners. It offers a comprehensive approach on improving security sector governance and capacity to address threats.

Kenya is viewed as the most advanced in terms of implementation of SGI since July 2015. This was when the then US president Barack Obama signed documents on the initiative during his visit to Kenya.

Other countries in the programme are

Nigeria, Ghana, Niger, Mali and Tunisia.

SGI's objective is to help with institutional capacity building in all facets of security sector.
