A 30-year-old woman on Sunday gave birth to five babies at Matata Nursing Home in Oyugis town, Homa Bay county.

Jacinta Akinyi of Kachieng’ Bongu village in Rachuonyo South sub-county gave birth to three boys and two girls.

Unfortunately, the first boy and the last girl died a few minutes after birth.

She told journalists at the hospital that she experienced a mild labour pain compared to the previous births.

The woman, who had four children before the current birth, said she did not expect to give birth to five children at ago.

"I was rushed to the hospital by my grandmother immediately I felt labour pangs. I gave birth to five children but two died later."

Matata Nursing Officer Kennedy Otieno said the remaining children are in good condition.

The babies weighed 1.5 kilograms instead of 3.5Kg which is required for a normal birth.

"The children are stable. We've realised that the biological functions of their bodies are okay," Otieno said.

The medic said they referred the mother and children to Kisii Level Five so that the children can be incubated.

The casual labourer is married to Josephat Okumu who is a cane cutter at Sukari Industries Ltd in Ndhiwa sub-county.

She appealed to well-wishers to intervene with humanitarian aid to help her children survive.

"We're financially challenged and cannot pay medical bills for specialised treatment."

She asked the political leaders from the county and well-wishers to come to her aid so that the kids survive.

Otieno said Akinyi delivered the kids prematurely.

"She gave birth at 33 weeks instead of the normal 40 weeks," he said
