An Embu MCA wants the law on the dress code to be observed by women legislators while in the precincts of the August House reviewed.

Margaret Kariuki (Nominated) said: "The law is male-friendly and hostile to women."

The law states that women leaders in county and national assembly should dress in skirt suits while attending to House business.

But the MCA lamented that the law is draconian, discriminative and overtaken by events of the current era.

She said the legislation was crafted during the time few women were nominated or elected to Parliament.

Kariuki asserted that the law should be amended to end cases of intimidation of female leaders perceived to have flouted the code.

She pointed out that the law is in most cases applied selectively to settle political scores.

"At times the law is applied to limit the vote on bills presented at the floor of the House," she said.

The legislator told The Star on Thursday that she was once thrown out of the house for donning a jumper and woolen trench coat.

She said that their male counterparts participate in house business while wearing coats and sweaters but have never been thrown out.

The MCA said that she would not let such "retrogressive laws" hinder her efforts to represent her people in the county assembly.

She said though the law should be followed to the core, it is human to understand and obey the weather.

The MCA said she would move an amendment on the assembly dressing code.

On October 17, Nyeri speaker John Kaguchia threw out nominated member Beth Nyawira over indecent dressing.

The MCAs was found to have broken the speaker's rules on the dress code.

She was dressed in a short sleeveless dress contrary to the guidelines issued by the Speaker.

Kaguchia directed the female members to wear a coat to avoid exposing their arms.
