Busia women MCAs lose as males take lead of 14 assembly committees

Women MCAs have been locked out of chairperson slots in the 14 Busia county assembly committees whose formation ended on Friday.

The assembly, which has 53 members of which 18 are women, only has seven women occupying vice-chairperson seats.

The men, who dominate the house, made sure they secured the seven vice-chairperson seats.

Nominated MCA Angela Nafula Ongura was elected vice-chairperson of planning, trade, tourism, cooperative and industry committee chaired by Marachi West MCA John Okanga.

Angurai South MCA Grace Olita was elected vice chairperson of the culture, sports, and social services committee which is manned by Marachi Central MCA Patrick Obuya.

Zainabu Muyoti (nominated) is the vice-chair of implementation committee with Namboboto/Nambuku MCA Vincent Olumbe as the chairperson.

Bwiri MCA Beatrice Kanoti was elected vice-chairperson of agriculture, environment, and natural resources committee chaired by Angurai East MCA Job Oteba.

Nancy Okademi (nominated) will deputise Bukhayo West MCA Vincent Ojiambo in the health and sanitation committee.

Novena Ndalilro (nominated) is the vice-chair of children, early childhood and vocational training committee headed by Linus Asiba (Matayos South).

Halima Hussein is the vice-chair of Delegated County Legislation. Bunyala South MCA Casper Juma is the chairperson.

Nangina MCA John Obwogo is the chairman of the budget and appropriations committee and will be deputised by Malaba South's David Kokonya.

Bunyala North MCA Fredrick Musirimba is the chairperson of the finance committee with Ang'orom MCA James Ong'ole as his deputy.

Ageng'a Nanguba MCA Evans Barasa was elected chairperson of the public investment and accounts committee. He will be assisted by David Luyembe of Mayenje ward.

Milton Kassamani (Bukhayo Central) is the chairperson of the committee on transport, public works, and disaster management.

Moses Echopat (Amukura East) is the vice chairperson after elections which saw Nambale Township MCA Mwajuma Toloi failing to secure a seat.
