The Kenya National Union of Teachers has no affiliation to any political party, Secretary General Wilson Sossion said on Tuesday.

He said that they are not supporting any political party ahead of the August 8 general election.

Sossion said that Knut members enjoy the right to a political decision but not under the umbrella of the union.

"The union does not support any political party. We engage with the government of the day," he said.

He added that the union permits staff and elected members to take leave so as to vie for any political seat.

"In a January 10 circular, the union notified its members who want to contest political seats to take three months leave from May 9," Sossion said.

He added those who will win elective seats shall be required to retire from the union in accordance with Knut rules.

"Those members who will lose in the election shall enjoy an additional 30 days leave from August 8 to reorganise themselves before resuming duty," he said.

The union boss warned members or employees against campaigns for any political party while performing their duties.
