Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has said he will resign if authorities do not take action against rogue city council askaris in 24 hours.
He urged Governor Evans Kidero to intervene and put an end to the "unnecessary killing" of hawkers in the city.
This neither encompasses politicking nor seeking to please his electorate, Sonko said, adding he "cannot sit back and watch innocent Kenyans being killed like wild animals".
“I am saddened by the manner in which Nairobi city
askaris are intimidating, harassing and brutally murdering hawkers," he said via Facebook on Thursday.
“My conscience cannot allow me to continue earning a salary and allowances as the people whose interest I am supposed to protect are murdered in cold blood.”
Noting that 19 hawkers have been killed in the last 12 months, he said the county assembly must write laws for the protection of hawkers and the regulation of their activities.
He also called for investigations into why no action has been taken against county askaris accused of beating and killing hawkers.
“On Wednesday, I was assured by DPP Keriako Tobiko and CID Director Ndegwa Muhoro that action will be taken,” he said.
He added that the Governor must also sack all corrupt officers at City Hall.
