It’s been 16 years since East FM went live on February 9, 1998 and there has been no looking back since then. Many moons ago I was an avid listener of East FM and the journey to being one of the team members is liberally peppered with lots of stories and laughter along the way.
The former owners sold off East FM to the Radio Africa group and East FM became a proud member of this family and has grown from strength to strength. The only constant in life is change and the changes this station has been through are immense and positive. We have grown steadily with a lot of love and support from sponsors, team-mates and above all, the reason why we actually exist, the wonderful listeners.
All of us at East FM are treated like family and close friends by the listeners of the station. They open up their homes and hearts to us and welcome us there and we feel like we belong. They rejoice with us and they weep with us and for us. Last year in September when the Westgate attacks happened, our East FM team was holding an event there and many were hurt, lives were lost and those who made it out, well, their lives have changed completely. In all this, the listeners rallied around and supported the team completely.
We have been welcomed into homes when it’s the holy month of Ramadhan and we go and break the fast with them. The love is overwhelming. I’ve always left a home feeling like I was one of the family members.
In my personal journey at East FM, I can’t begin to say how much I love being here. In my turbulent life moments, my colleagues, my family at work have stood by me. From demands to being bought lunch to begging for treats like kids, we have far too much fun at East FM. You know what they say, if you enjoy what you do for a living, you will never work for the rest of your life; and that’s exactly what we all experience. I know each one of us loves what we do and appreciate all that we experience. My family and friends envy me, with reason.
On Sunday, as we turn 16, I’m just proud to say I’m part of this fantastic group of people who have the most amazing minds. It is truly a pleasure to work with some of the most awesome people in our country.
Happy birthday East FM. You are far greater than all of us put together because in radio we all know – You are only as good as your last show.
