Electricity consumption by region: Financial Year 2024/25

A regional breakdown of electricity consumption during the financial year 2024/2025 highlights significant differences in energy demand across the country, according to data from the EPRA Energy & Petroleum Statistics Report.

The Nairobi region dominates the country's electricity sales, consuming a massive 4,964.34 GWh.

This figure is more than double the consumption of the next largest region, Coast, which registered 2,010.06 GWh.

The Rift Valley region followed closely, with sales of 1,560.36 GWh.

Demand drops off significantly after the top three. The North Eastern region recorded sales of 1,231.66 GWh, while the three remaining regions—Mt Kenya, West Kenya, and South Nyanza—each consumed less than 1,000 GWh.

Mt Kenya sales stood at 746.76 GWh, West Kenya at 596.11 GWh, and the lowest consumption was in South Nyanza at just 220.59 GWh.

The vast gap between Nairobi and other regions underscores its role as the major economic and industrial hub, making it by far the largest single consumer of electrical energy.
