Tinnitus is the perception of ringing, buzzing, or hissing sounds in the ears without an external source.
It is a symptom, not a disease, and can result from hearing loss, ear infections, or exposure to loud noise.
About 15 to 20 per cent of adults worldwide experience tinnitus, though severity varies.
It may be temporary or chronic, with some cases lasting for years.
Stress, caffeine, and alcohol can worsen tinnitus symptoms.
Treatments include sound therapy, hearing aids, and cognitive behavioral therapy, but no universal cure exists.
