In Summary

Education remains one of the most vulnerable sectors in conflict zones, with schools, students, and teachers increasingly targeted.

Between 2022 and 2023, over 6,000 attacks were recorded globally, including bombings, abductions, and military occupation of learning spaces.

The use of schools for military purposes rose by 20%, undermining their role as safe havens.

More than 10,000 students were killed, harmed, or detained during this period, highlighting the urgent need for international accountability.

In 2024 alone, attacks surged by 64%, signaling a worsening trend.

The UN General Assembly established September 9 as a global day of recognition in 2020, aiming to spotlight these violations and galvanize protective action. International law affirms that schools must remain civilian spaces, and over 120 countries have endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration.

The 2025 theme, “Challenging narratives, reshaping action,” calls for a shift in how education in emergencies is framed and defended.

Beyond commemoration, the day demands renewed commitment to safeguarding learning environments and the futures they nurture.
