In Nyeri, the future of learning is being written in code. The county government has partnered with a Swedish organisation to digitise all levels of education, a move officials say will ease transitions for learners while modernising the sector.

At the heart of the partnership is SchoolTry, an innovative platform designed to automate and streamline school operations.

Already used in several African countries and beyond, it caters to primary, secondary and tertiary institutions—including vocational and online learning centres.

Governor Mutahi Kahiga, who hosted Roland Williams, SchoolTry’s Director of Growth, in Nyeri town, described the collaboration as “a promising avenue for growth and transformation.”

But behind the optimism lies a sobering reality. Nyeri’s education system still struggles with underfunded ECDE centres, poorly equipped training facilities, a shortage of skilled teachers and inadequate infrastructure.

Kahiga believes technology can bridge these gaps. “This partnership is in line with our commitment to inclusive development,” he said, adding that digitisation will empower unemployed youth through vocational training while equipping them with certifications to compete in local and international job markets.

The governor envisions pathways for Nyeri’s skilled workers to access opportunities abroad, including Sweden, through recognised training.

He pledged budgetary support to the project, calling SchoolTry’s capacity to embed ICT from an early age a game-changer.

With 15 million users worldwide and offices in Sweden, Nigeria and Kenya, SchoolTry has made strides in Kilifi, Makueni and Kajiado counties.

Nyeri hopes to be next in line, anchoring its youth firmly in the digital era.
