DCP Deputy Leader Cleophas Malala has called for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to conduct non-partisan by-elections.
Malala is optimistic that they will win all 22 seats and UDA will lose out in all the areas, saying they have what it takes to win all the seats.
“I urge the IEBC to live by its words; they assured the nation that they are going to give us a date in a week, but up to today, the IEBC has not given us the date for the by-elections. UDA has done a survey and realised that out of the 22 by-elections, there is none that they can win,” he said.
Malala called on IEBC to be non-partisan and conduct the by-elections independently.
“I ask our counterpart, the ruling party, not to interfere with the decision of the IEBC. We are ready for elections and IEBC should give us a date as soon as possible,” he added.
DCP intends to field candidates across all the upcoming by-elections. It unveiled the candidates on Tuesday and expressed confidence of emerging victorious in its first-ever electoral contest.
DCP was officially launched on July 7 after months of delays, becoming one of the newest parties in the country.
Malala affirmed that the party will field candidates for all the by-elections.
"We convened a meeting of aspirants who are going to contest in the forthcoming elections. DCP party has attracted many aspirants, we are going to allow democracy to work, that is why we are having this number of aspirants," he said.
There are 23 pending by-elections, comprising six National Assembly seats, one Senate seat, and 16 Member of County Assembly (MCA) positions.
Initially, there were 22 pending by-elections, but on May 31, the Court of Appeal upheld the nullification of Harrison Kombe's election as Magarini MP, sending him back to the ballot.
The other seats fell vacant either through deaths or appointments to other roles.
Notable vacancies include Baringo Senate seat left vacant following the death of incumbent William Cheptumo, Ugunja MP seat fell vacant following the appointment of Opiyo Wandayi as Energy CS, same as Mbere North MP seat, which followed the appointment of incumbent Geoffrey Ruku to the Cabinet.
Additionally, Kasipul seat fell vacant after MP Ong’ondo Were was assassinated on April 30.
Hassan Maalim and Malulu Injendi also passed away, occasioning by-elections in Banisa and Malava constituencies respectively.
Malala said the Banisa and Malava aspirants are already actively engaging with constituents, having been unveiled earlier.
