Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced that all medical bills and extra costs for victims in the fire that killed 8 in Kibra will be catered for.

Speaking during a church service at AIC Kibra, Sakaja said families of the victims will also be assisted in covering burial costs.

"We will waive all hospital bills, and they will not be charged for anything at the mortuary," Sakaja said.

"We will also cater for the burial plans and the coffins even as we help them rebuild."

The governor also called for the streamlining of the connection of illegal power connections in informal settlements to tame frequent fire breakouts.

"Otherwise, we will have a fire every day. And those living there will never notice. There are models that have been used globally on social connections to power. That is the solution we ask for," Sakaja said.

During the fire in the Makina area on Saturday, May 24, eight people are said to have been killed.

Police said at least 20 others were left with serious injuries.

Of these, seven were dire and were admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire claimed the lives of seven members of the same family and a pregnant woman.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established.

Area Member of Parliament Peter Orero confirmed the tragedy."Six individuals - a man, two women, and three children - sustained serious burns and have been rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they fight to recover," Orero said in a statement.

He also noted that a response team had been deployed to work with emergency services and ensure affected families receive immediate support, including medical care, counselling, and other essential assistance.

The incident happened at about 5 am as the victims were asleep.

Kilimani police boss Patricia Yegon said. “Eight people died while seven others are in the hospital with serious burns. We are investigating the cause of the fire."
