Kiambu farmers are set to benefit from a new initiative aimed at boosting their yields and tackling food insecurity in the County.
Governor Wamatangi accompanied by his deputy governor Rosemary Kirika held a strategy meeting with technical staff from the department of agriculture and livestock to discuss and plan for the upcoming distribution of farm in-puts scheduled across the county.
Wamatangi said the strategy meeting was a way of tackling the rising food insecurity and economic empowerment.
Dr Wamatangi expressed his commitment to steering the county towards greater efficiency and ensuring that public resources are used effectively.
He said the distribution of farm inputs is expected to boost agricultural productivity in the area and provide economic empowerment to farmers adding that the initiative is part of a wider effort to address food insecurity in Kiambu County and promote sustainable agriculture practices.
“The County will distribute certified maize (Sh30 million) and beans seeds (Sh5 million), coffee fertilizer for the cooperatives (Sh30 million) and avocado seedlings), fingerlings, three-month-old piglets and kienyeji chicks to farmers in all the 60 wards,” Wamatangi said.
He noted that his administration is committed to ensuring proper accountability of public resources by making decisions that will steer the County in a direction that will ensure things are done efficiently.
The governor said his administration will enhance extension services to farmers across the county to ensure they produce enough to feed themselves and earn a living through the value addition.
Deputy governor Rosemary Kirika said that through the meeting with the stakeholders, the department was able to come up with the best ways to identify input beneficiaries.
She expressed confidence that the government will deliver its promise to the agricultural sector to enhance food security.
Wamatangi a few months ago had urged the assembly to push bills that would help to safeguard land use in the county, regretting that residents are uprooting coffee and tea and investing in real estate.
He pledged to make use of available land where he noted that his administration will make Thika an industrial smart city and make use of idle Delmonte land.
He further said research centres will be established to cater to ranging emerging issues within the county.
