Gunmen shoots dead pillion passenger in Meru ambush

Detectives are investigating an incident where unknown gunmen shot and killed a pillion passenger in an ambush in the Mutuati area, Meru County.

The incident happened on Friday night in Kisabei area along the Kinanduba-Mpeketoni road.

A rider told police he was carrying two pillion passengers when he was shot at.

A bullet hit one of the passengers before he fell off the motorcycle and died on the spot.

They told police that when he heard gunshots that were meant to warn him to stop, he made a U-turn and sped off and did not stop at the scene.

It was then that the passenger was shot and killed.

Police visited the scene and found the body of the victim on the tarmac road with a gunshot wound to the head.

The motive of the shooting was not immediately established.

The body was moved to Maua Sub-County General Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

The area has been experiencing incidents of banditry amid an operation to stem the menace.

A special unit has been formed to focus on the area in taming the issue, which has seen dozens of animals stolen and some locals killed.

Elsewhere in Maseno, Kisumu County, a boda boda rider was killed and robbed of his motorcycle in an attack on May 10.

The body of George Otieno, 31, was found on the roadside in the Ojola area.

Police established that the deceased had, on the previous day at about 9 pm, ferried two pillion passengers from Kisiani to Osare area, but never came back to the usual operating place.

The body had two deep cuts on the back of the head and one at the forehead.

There was no blood at the scene, suggesting that the deceased was murdered somewhere else and the body was dumped at the secondary scene.

He was robbed of the motorcycle and his mobile phone.
