Nairobi City's crackdown on land rate defaulters
Nairobi City County is scheduled to commence a crackdown on property owners who have defaulted on land rates.
This follows a grace period issued by the county last month.
Governor Johnson Sakaja recently revealed that only 20% of the city’s landowners, about 50,000 out of 256,000 registered parcels, have been paying land rates, a situation he described as “unsustainable.”
Speaking at City Hall on Friday, Receiver of Revenue, Tiras Njoroge, confirmed that the county has finalised its preparation for enforcement operations and will roll them out across all sub-counties.
The full enforcement of the order will involve clamping of properties, issuing of notices, and legal proceedings for chronic defaulters.
Rex Maasai inquest
An inquest into the death of Rex Masai resumes today at the Milimani Law Court in Nairobi.
Rex Kanyike Masai was shot and killed in Nairobi’s city centre as police battled anti-tax protesters in June 2024.
He was rushed to Bliss Hospital along Nairobi's Moi Avenue, where he was pronounced dead.
The Director of Public Prosecutions then recommended an inquest to determine if murder charges should be preferred against suspects.
The inquest is being conducted by Milimani principal magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo.
